How much of Christmas traditions do we carry on from our ancestors?
Many, but I’ll only talk about 3:
Christmas Tree: Prior to the 17th Century and German Lutherans, people didn’t have a Christmas tree unless they were one of the tree worshiping pagans or druids. However, since German Prince Albert brought the tree tradition with him to Queen Victoria in 1840, we enjoy this decorative tree.
Eggnog: Eggnog history starts with Captain John Smith’s settlement of Jamestown in 1607. The colonists named their recipe “egg and grog”. Grog was a term back then for a drink containing rum. Egg & Grog was reduced to “egg’n’grog” then shortening again to eggnog. It’s a simple recipe of milk, beaten eggs, sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg. 1
Mistletoe: “In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace, under which enemies could declare a truce or warring spouses kiss and make-up.”3 Some say there was a prophesy that Baldur, Thor’s grandson, would die. His mother, Frigga, asked every plant, tree, and animal to promise not to harm him. All agreed. A celebration was in order. However, Loki shot him with a mistletoe arrow – the only plant overlooked – and died. Baldur was loved by all (except Loki) and all wept for this sun god for three days. He was resurrected by his mother. It is believed her tears created the white berries. With her son restored, Frigga kissed all underneath the mistletoe. She stated that anyone who stands under it, only a kiss as a symbol of love and friendship would greet them.
It is poisonous – so only kissing under the mistletoe :)
